Expert Talk on Leadership Lessons Students Can Learn from Defence Forces
The Department of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities organized an expert talk on “Leadership Lessons Students Can Learn from Defence Forces” on 16th April 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 am at the Multifacility Center for students of Tech First Year. The objective was to help students understand and imbibe leadership qualities from the Defence Forces for personal development and responsible citizenship, which many students later described as “very useful for learning” and “highly motivating.”
The session was delivered by (Retd.) Flight Lieutenant Shiwalee Deshpande, Secretary of Prahar Samaj Jagruti Sanstha and Director of Prahar Defence Academy. Drawing from her service in the Indian Air Force, she connected defence values with student life. She emphasized discipline as the foundation of progress and encouraged punctuality, consistency, and time management. Students appreciated these insights, noting the importance of “discipline, honesty, and punctuality in daily life” and realizing that consistent habits prepare individuals for unexpected challenges. The Kargil War was cited to demonstrate how preparation leads to success.
She highlighted decision-making as a critical leadership responsibility and stressed planning to minimize risks. Referring to Captain Vikram Batra, she reinforced that leadership is about responsibility, echoing a student reflection: “Leadership is not about being in charge—it is about taking care of those in your charge.” An incident from Baramulla (Jammu & Kashmir, January 2004) illustrated alertness in high-pressure situations.
The speaker also emphasized integrity, ethics, respect, and Indian values, including Matrudevo Bhava, along with patriotism and vigilance. The session concluded with a message on courage and resilience, captured in her line, “Apni faulad si himmat ko na hone do.” Overall, students found the session inspiring and interactive, with many expressing a desire for more such sessions in the future. The session was coordinated by Mrs. Sayali Kanhav, with support of all first year faculties, with special appreciation extended to HoD, Dr. Smita Tolani for her guidance and to Prof. Vrushali Pethe for effectively anchoring the session.
