Industrial Visit to Koyna Dam
The Department of Civil Engineering organized an industrial visit to Koyna Dam and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kaas Pathar from September 22 to 26, 2024.
Koyna Dam, one of India's largest dams on the Koyna River, plays a crucial role in hydroelectric power generation. Key learning points for students included materials used (rubble masonry and concrete), structural design, construction challenges, seismic considerations (including retrofitting techniques), the Koyna hydroelectric project, electricity generation and distribution, and the dam's role in water storage, flood control, irrigation techniques, and maintenance practices.
The students also visited Kaas Pathar, a biodiversity hotspot near Satara known for its seasonal wildflower blooms. This visit enhanced their understanding of environmental engineering, land conservation, sustainable tourism, and the relationship between engineering and environmental protection.
Dr. Satish D. Kene, Prof. Yogesh S. Lanjewar, and Prof. Kusum S. Balani coordinated this five-day visit.
