Example text

Bender, Norbert Freedman, Joan Hoffenberg, Denise Kagan, Carrie Schaffer, and Neal Vorus T he next three chapters explore the hypothesis that the operationalizing and measurement of the construct “representations of the therapeutic dialogue” can serve as a valid source of evidence about the outcomes of psychoanalytic therapy and the internalization processes whereby psychoanalytic therapy becomes and remains an adaptive resource in patients’ lives after termination. The research strategy we have adopted to explore this central idea is based on our shared commitment to three basic operating premises: 1.

Comparable instructional sets have been used to study: how the representation of affects becomes crystallized (Gottschalk & Geiser, 1969); the conceptual and emotional maturity of adults’ representations of significant others (Bender, Farber & Geller, 1997; Blatt, Auerbach & Levy, 1997); and the processes of symbolization (Freedman, 1998). 2. Referral issues. The patient is then asked to describe what led him or her to therapy and what life was like at that time. 3. Five adjectives. The next phase of the interview has two interrelated parts.

The question of the relevance of duration and session frequency, and the nuances and impact of the therapeutic relationship and the transference are not studied. These aspects of the psychoanalytic psychotherapy experience are of interest and the question of how to study them and how to reconstruct the psychotherapy experience is an important one. A brief history of psychoanalytic research Psychoanalytic research has a history of its own. It began with Fenichel’s (1930) account of the Berlin institute; Bachrach’s (1991) summary of outcome studies reported by the Boston, Chicago, and New York analytic institutes; Wallerstein’s (1986) iconic statement of 42 lives in treatment at the Menninger Foundation; and the “RAPA” report introducing the field of process research highlighted by Luborsky’s measure of the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) (Luborsky & Chris-Christoph, 1990).
