Older events are marked by paleo–sandblow vents, ejected sand, and a deformed stream-channel deposit. Fossils of horse (Equus) and northern pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides), place a 120–10 ka range on the oldest event. Stratigraphy and soils suggest that it occurred during the last Pinedale interstade (ca. 20 ka). 8 m of cumulative fault displacement with ~2 m of horizontal extension occurred since then. Orientation of faults, clastic dikes, and slip vectors, along with earthquake focal mechanism solutions, were used to determine stress-field orientations for the six events.
It is also consistent with recent focal mechanism solutions (Table 3; Fig. 9) reported by Stickney (1997). Thus, the dominant, episodic, normal displacement (Table 3) on the Lima Reservoir fault zone is typical of northeast-southwest extension of the northern Basin and Range. The clastic dikes are, however, not related to northern Basin and Range normal faulting. Clastic dike 2 lies above a small, southdipping reverse fault that arched the sand source bed and overlying strata. Sand was injected along a near-vertical strike-parallel joint in the arched area directly above this reverse fault as well as along a north-dipping reverse fault just south of the main vent (Figs.
