Soon afterward, Regina received a packet that told her everything. Her mother was alive and in Atlanta. Regina had her name, her address, and a copy of her driver’s-license photo. Of course it wasn’t the woman from the yearbook. Her birth mother was divorced and had no other children. She’d been a student at the University of Georgia when she’d gotten pregnant, but had given birth to Regina in Knoxville. Even Regina’s birth grandparents were still alive. Unfortunately, none of them wanted to meet Regina.
And I would have been at the hospital within five minutes if I’d had a car. Instead, it was thirty minutes on the El, including a transfer at Belmont to the Brown Line. Both times, the labor didn’t take, and it was back to long walks by the lake for Ned and Jill to jar that little sucker loose. One night, I came home drunk to find the message on the answering machine. Jill’s water had broken. They were hanging out at a friend’s house until labor progressed to the point where they needed to go to the hospital; someone would call me at the appropriate hour.
